What Live Foods do You use and Why ???

Here you can post everything about food, what should you feed your discus, what
should you avoid, how to make your own food mix, etc.

I am planning to obtain a starter culture of daphnia and feeding them to the fish I plan on getting in 3 weeks.

In my old hatchery 16 years ago I had a large aquarium filled with green water and a thriving culture of daphnia. These little creatures would start a feeding frenzy among the discus each time they were offered. I figured if it worked good for Dr. Schmidt-Focke, it would be okay for me.

Another food that received similar response from the discus were adult brine shrimp. These were easy to culture and grew fast making them a possibility as a sustainable source.

Another easily sustainable live food is the white worm. I would feed all my fish one feeding of these worms daily. I had perhaps six culture boxes going and would harvest from a different one each day. I fed plain yogurt based on a recomendation from either Peter Thode or Jack Whattley at a DSG function in NYC or Baltimore. My memory fades over the years.

I also cultured some earthworms. These were a small variety sold in the NE USA for trout fishing. The largest discus could eat these w/o much trouble.

I also went through a phase where I collected mosquito rafts and fed the wrigglers to the fish. This was soon too much work and did not last.

I fed some blackworms from Michigan a couple of times. These were hard to clean and maintain for me compared to terrestrial worms.

I tried culturing scuds, but could not get them going fast enough to be a sustainable food source.

So in my future discus endevors, the live foods I will use are daphnia, white worms and earthworms. From time to time I'll culture some brine shrimp.
