How does the hardness of water effect discus?

Postby Walter Soestbergen » Sat Jan 31, 2004 12:35 pm

In answering this you should note t effects all fishes not just discus. Water hardness affects freshwater fish in terms of osmoregulation. Since hard water has a higher concentration of salts then soft water. The osmotic difference between the fishes internal environment and the surrounding water is smaller in hard water, therefore the osmoregularory system has a smaller work load to repace ions lost from the blood. I recently found a supposed knowlegeable discus keeper who is passing out the word that it is perfectly ok to keep discus in hard water with a high ph for long periods of time. WRONG. You can't fool mother nature for long and get away with it.
I'm myself, there are already enough others.
