Little circular holes?!

Information on another popular "flat and round fish" that most of us keep.

Little circular holes?!

Postby Mark Woodhouse » Sun Feb 19, 2012 3:07 pm

All 6 of my Altums are still thriving and growing but i've noticed something strange on just 1 of them a week or so ago.
On one side of it's body on the darkest stripes it has a little circular looking hole out of the stripe as if something like a little plec has sucked on it and made a mouth size hole, on another stripe on the other side of it's body it has another!
It is not stressed or in discomfort in any way and is very strange as i have never seen this before on any fish in over 30 years of keeping fish!
It looks ever so weird as the silver circle is inbetween the dark stripe on both sides of the body but in different positions, all the other 5 are ok, just this one, any thoughts?!
Cheers, Mark.

Well i've had a reply on Finarama and it seems mine is not the only one!
Apparently there was a batch imported into Florida that had quite a few fish the same as mine and some with more spots than mine. They think it is down to genetics and has happened a few times with imports they have recieved.

What's your theory then if this doesn't add up, i'd like to hear your opinion please.
If you click on Finarama on the forum and go to the diseases & treatment section, it is on there with the title, little silver circles in dark stripes,
cheers!

Finarama is a great site and there are some great people that I respect hugely. There are also some people (some based in the UK) that I do not agree with some of their beliefs and therefore do not connect with to any great extent.

Anyway...........off now to read the article

Hello Tony.
I could see what the pictures were on about, the dark stripe was in a wavy line instead of straight, meaning there were some dark pigments missing just like mine were. Also they were not indicating that my fish were from Florida, just that they had had a batch come into Florida with dark pigment missing.
That was how mine was looking until last night when i looked really closely and i could see light pink insteadof silver which obviously means it has broke the skin now and i presume because of this that it is an infection.
It looks like the cooking salt will be out now!
Thanks a lot Tony,
Mark.

Table Salt is cooking salt............as is any salt you can use in cooking

The important difference is table salt and sea salt

and IMO Altums are not a fan of salt

I was always told that cooking salt was different to table salt, that was why one was called cooking and one was called table.
I thought that table salt had an extra ingredient that cooking salt didn't and that was bad for fish and why you couldn't use it but could use the cooking.
Ok then if you are 100% without doubt certain that you are correct, i will have to buy some meds, i'm not sure what to get though as i'm not even sure what the fish has, i know it is some kind of infection so perhaps an ant-fungus treatment is needed?
Have you had a look on ebay, some bloke is selling 30 Altums, it will be interesting to see what they go for, there is also someone else advertising proper Altums and i've just emailed him, i'm sure they are Peruvian and not not the real deal Altums. I hope i'm right in complaining as i hate to see people trying to rip others off by putting the word Altum just to bump prices up, anyway that's my rant over!
So back to the meds, anti-fungus or something else?
Cheers, Mark.

Missing the point

Any salt that can be used in cooking can be classed as cooking salt  that is fine when cooking (except the fact that sea salt is not as potent as table or cooking salt)

When it comes to fish.......then..............DO NOT USE TABLE SALT ON FISH.........or any salt that contains anti caking agents.

When you do use salt...............TAKE CARE WITH ALTUMS OR CARDINALS

Best Regards............Tony
p.s. I think this is the best article I've read in relation to salt dipping fish.

I never do salt baths, only mix it in the tank water and leave it in until whatever disease has gone.
What do you recommend instead of salt then for the 2 little patches on my fish?
They're all fine apart from this 1 fish, at the minute they have the tank lights out and they're pecking at each other and darting at one another, all as it should be!
Cheers, Mark.

No mate, it doesn't seem to be getting any better or worse, just the same, very strange!
I treat them like Discus though, so i'm keeping up with the regular clean water changes!
