Tank cleaning

Postby Kevin Delude » Fri Nov 07, 2008 10:19 am

Hello everyone! I was hoping I could get some advice and opinions on a question that I have. I also hope that Fred reads this as he has given ( as well as many others) me great advice over the years. Here's my question: I have 3 juvenile discus housed in a 55 gallon (208 liters)tank. This tank has been up and running for several years and I would like to do a total and thorough cleaning. My thoughts are moving the 3 discus to a 10 gallon (38 liter) tank for a few weeks while I tear down the 55 gallon tank, clean eveything and then cycle it and finally bringing the discus back into the tank. I have lost a few discus in this tank over the years and just feel its time to clean it really well and start over. Do you think I have other options? Any thoughts on this matter would be really appreciated.

Regards,
Kevin

Thanks everyone for the great advice. I am embarking on this adventure over the weekend. I have a question in regards to PP. Where can I find this? If I don't have PP is there a substitute that I can use? Also, What meds should I be giving to new fish. I have some new discus and have not yet treated them..
Also, Fred, where do I find De-chlor? Stores, LFS, fish catalog?
Thanks again and have a great day everyone!!

Regards,
Kevin

Hi Kevin :welcome:

PP... depends on local / state laws in your city / state.... over here PP is "ok"... just TRANSPORTATION of the compound is so "red tapped" that it is nearly impossible to transport the material   LFS might have this "bottle" of "dark, dark red / purple / maroon" liquid for "parasites" or "sterilizing water" which is PP already "made up" for "dosing" so many drops per gallon / liter. If you can not locate any PP... try the liquid laundry bleach method.
